Studies and Analysis
RealTick
8.0 offers a host of tools that you can use
to build a personal library of analytics. Once created,
RealTick displays these analyses graphically in
a Chart, as a column in a MarketMinder, or as a
condition to Trigger an Order.
You can build new studies from existing studies,
compose custom studies using mathematical functions,
change the parameters of any number of studies,
and add them to your library for an array of personalized
defaults.

RealTick's new central dialog
box, Display and Analysis, contains
a vast collection of controls so that you can select
and modify chart studies, conditions, attributes,
and properties. There are several new technical
studies in RealTick 8.0, such as Weighted Average,
StochRSI, True Range, and Arithmetic. Now you can
create your own personal library, containing countless
customized studies that can be displayed not only
in charts, but in the MarketMinder windows as well.
From a RealTick Chart, right-click or press F9
to open the Display and Analysis
menu. Here, you can select studies, modify
displays, and change the attributes of a chart all
within a central dialog box. Included in this menu
is a grid control that streamlines setting up a
variety of display options such as colors, panels,
axis linking, chart style, and so on.
- Show/hide a study.
- Series in a study.
- Select a color for the aforementioned
study.
- Show/hide a study in a table or price-tracking window. You can show a study
in the price-tracking window, and choose to not
display this study on a chart, and vice-versa.
- Panel: Select either Top, Middle,
or Bottom for the panel position on your screen
display.
- Axis: If a you choose to display
prices along the right vertical axis and would
like a study (e.g. moving average) to link with
the prices, you must link the study with the price
data by selecting ‘left’ or ‘link right’. By default,
most studies display along the left axis.
- Line Style: Select line, bar,
candlestick, etc.
- Color Rule: By default, RealTick
ships a default candle color rule. Select Default
Candle Color to bring up a dialog box
to configure up and down candle colors.
Click Add Study to display the Select Study dialog. For ease-of-use,
RealTick groups like studies into categories:
Math, Oscillators, Statistics, and Stochastics.
To add multiple studies, hold the <ctrl> key
while selecting studies.
Selecting any RealTick study brings up its property
page where you may change the parameters and input
series. Saving the changes adds the modified study
to your library, making it available for other charts
or MarketMinders.

RealTick offers two ways to save defaults:
- highlight a study and click the Add
New button, or
- right-click on a study in the Display and Analysis
grid and select Save Study Config.
The studies listed in the Display and Analysis’
grid control populate the Input Series column in a property page, when applicable. To add
a study to the input series, be sure to first add
it to the grid control.
Building Studies in Your
Library
A few examples of
studies to build your library:
- To apply Moving Averages to Technical Studies,
highlight Moving Average and click Add New.
Highlight the study you want to smooth from the
Input Series column, click OK, name the study,
and RealTick saves the study in the Moving Average
folder.
- To add upper and lower envelopes to any study
– for example, to add a bollinger band on a RSI,
select RSI and an envelope study. In the envelope
study’s parameter dialog, select Bollinger Bands
and click on the MA Parameters tab to select RSI.

The Composer dialog box provides a workspace where
you can embed studies within studies and wrap studies
around studies in a well-defined manner. As studies
are selected, RealTick adds them to the custom study
workspace.
Arithmetic Studies
Arithmetic Studies & Other Features

The introduction of Arithmetic Studies helps you to build custom
studies using formulas to help identify trends, momentum
etc. The Arithmetic study provides an interface to
add, subtract, multiply, and divide studies and values
such as:
– 2*close[-1] + 5*high + MA(close, 5)[-2]
+ 350.
A few examples of the studies you can build using
existing studies:
- To add two MACD, each with a separate moving
average with different periods, add two copies
of MACD to your workspace, highlight a moving
average and click “embed” to include it in MACD.
Double click any study in the workspace to change
the parameters.
- To apply a user-defined moving average to any
study, add the study to your workspace, highlight
a moving average and click “wrap.”
- To measure momentum of recent history vs. a
longer term view, for example, measure the momentum
of the past 5 bars compared to the momentum of
the past 34 bars using a bar’s midpoint. In the
Composer dialog box, add two moving averages and
select Mid(High,Low) as its input series. Select
the Arithmetic study, add the two MAs to and select
subtract from the drop-down menu.
There are several new studies in
RealTick: Condition, Cumulative Sum, Maximum, Multiply,
Sum, Weighted Average, StochRSI, True Range, and
Arithmetic Study:
- The Cumulative Sum adds all the accumulating
values.
- The Maximum study compares the vectors to find
the maximum value.
- The Minimum study compares the vectors to find
the minimum value.
- The Multiply study multiplies any vectors you
choose.
- The Sum study will add any vectors you choose.
- StochRSI
- True Range
- Arithmetic study provides an interface to add,
subtract, multiply, and divide studies and values.
You can build a range of price bar such as (high-low)
and display the value either on the chart, the
price tracking box, or both.
